Tenovus Scotland Medal Lecture 2017

Professor Mike Lean, Professor of Human Nutrition at Glasgow University, is seen receiving the Tenovus Medal from University Vice-Principal Dame Anna Dominiczak – the medal is presented as part of the annual Tenovus Symposium at the University which was held this year on 13 December. In his medal lecture, Prof Lean spoke about Type 2 diabetes and the influences of obesity on its causation and treatment. He went on to present the results of the recently published DIRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial) Study, showing high rates of complete remission of diabetes in patients successfully following an intensive weight-reduction programme in primary care. This study opens up new ways to manage Type 2 diabetes, though longer-term outcome data are needed to demonstrate the full magnitude and duration of benefits.
